Renovated historic fisherman's house Godewind ***** built around 1800.
Located in the old fishing village of Altwarp
The Fischerhaus has been consistently classified with 5 out of 5 stars by the German Tourism Association since 2005.
A non-smoking house, in a 650 square metre garden, only about 50 metres from the beach. This small former climatic and spa resort, 750 years old, is situated on a peninsula of the Szczecin Lagoon on the German side and is surrounded by lots of water, countless natural beaches and its famous, large inland dunes, not far (13 km) from the seaside resort of Ueckermünde and approx. 13 kilometres as the crow flies from the Baltic Sea.
As the fishing village lies directly on the lagoon, you have an excellent distant view of the islands of Usedom and Wollin. Incidentally, the Szczecin Lagoon is a lagoon of the Baltic Sea and is larger than Lake Constance.
The coast of the lagoon and Baltic Sea has of course been characterised by fishing for centuries, so what could be more natural than choosing a historic fisherman's cottage as a romantic holiday home? On the ground floor of the house are the 60 m² holiday flat (2 to max. 4 persons) and a 45 m² studio with separate fully equipped kitchen (2 persons).
Both holiday flats are located next to each other and yet are completely separate and independent and have their own terraces.
You get the 5-star level if both flats are booked for 4 people, in which case we provide bed linen and towels free of charge.
Book here:
45 square metre studio for 2 people
with separate fully equipped kitchen.
It includes a living room with dining area on both sides of an extendable antique table, seating and a comfortable double bed with separate mattresses.
There is also an antique wardrobe as well as a historic chest and chest of drawers as a sideboard for a flat-screen TV and DVD blue-ray player.
Furthermore, a small shower room with wooden shelf, storage space, hairdryer, large mirror, make-up mirror, ...
On the property there is a laundry room with washing machine, tumble dryer, storage facilities, utensils for cycling, fishing equipment, barbecue and accessories, etc.
For our holiday guests we provide light deckchairs for the beach, a swing, high-quality wooden benches, armchairs, sun loungers with cushions, etc.
There is also a room for bicycles and a small historic smokehouse where garden furniture is stored.
Each flat has its own private, free car parking space. If you arrive by motorhome, sailing boat, etc., there are parking spaces at the harbour for a fee.
No visitor's tax yet. You can store your own bikes and fishing equipment in the garden shed. Strong and fast WLAN for ALL residents at the same time in the entire! House and even everywhere in the garden! free of charge.
Baby travel cot, high chair, handcart, toddler bike, please enquire in advance.
Smooth-running, robust touring ladies' 3-speed bikes can also be hired from us during the season (see additional costs). For special requests we recommend the Ueckermünde bike hire. We have 2 helmets, but if this is important to you, please bring your own. 1 infant seat can be fitted on one of them, no extra charge but please enquire. As well as a toddler bike with reversible training wheels and 1 handcart.
If you would like to spend time on the water in addition to cycling and hiking tours, you can hire a canoe from us for 1 day or 1 week (see additional costs).
Of course, we expect the entire property to be used with care.
Maximum occupancy:
When booking, please take into account the maximum occupancy of 4 persons for the 60 square metre flat and 2 persons for the 45 square metre studio with separate fully equipped kitchen. You can bring 1 baby/toddler per flat.
And 1 dog per flat. These are the binding maximum occupancies.
The landlord is occasionally in the house to prepare the free flats for the next guests, or to maintain the garden when you go on excursions and are not disturbed by the lawnmower. We also take care of the winter maintenance so that you don't get snowed in. The landlord then lives in the vacant flat or in the attic, but this should not disturb you as there is no footfall noise or similar. We are therefore available for you at any time if you have any problems. Even if no one is on site, we are always available for you by telephone.
Non-smoking house! However, smokers can use the small historic smokehouse in bad weather.
There is patio furniture, high-quality garden seating, sun loungers, a swing, canoe, bicycles, handcart, children's bicycle, barbecue, washing line, clothes horse, badminton, deckchairs, which you can also take to the beach, as well as CDs and DVDs, board games, books...
You are welcome to eat the delicious fruit from our trees and bushes. Through our years of experience with new guests and regular guests who have rented the Fischerhaus Godewind to relax, but still feel the urge to do something, please take the following statement with humour: Holiday guests who want to keep themselves busy on holiday or simply want to help create and maintain beautiful things for the fun of it, for which we of course understand, are welcome to engage in simple casual gardening such as mowing the lawn or cutting roses. Then you will have your own private "active wellness holiday".
Refurbishment / renovation status:
Renovation work is regularly carried out by us in both the Fischerhaus Godewind and the recently restored Fischer Hus Lütt Hauke during non-booking periods.
All electrical installations fulfil modern standards. Power failures are rare and are quickly rectified. The water from all pipes is drinkable, the entire installation in the house and village/region is new and lead-free. The Altwarp water also tastes very good. Even the lagoon itself fulfils drinking water standards. So you don't have to worry if your offspring takes a sip while bathing.
We look forward to welcoming you as our guests on the Szczecin Lagoon and will do our best to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
The house is centrally located in the village and yet quiet.
Due to its location as the only village on the tip of a headland, there is no through traffic and it is not cut up by a noisy main road like many other villages.
It is a coastal, beautiful, quiet landscape that is very sparsely populated. It is therefore not overcrowded, even in the summer season, like the Baltic coast. You can walk or cycle for hours without meeting people, you are alone with nature, the eagles (3 species), herons, roe deer, beavers, cranes ...
House history:
Houses with thatched or reed roofs, as they are called here, are characteristic of the Haff coast. However, Godewind was never thatched, so we preserved and added the historic tiles during the major restoration in 2005. A sign in front of the house indicates that it was also a captain's house in its long history. However, in its architectural style it is a fisherman's house.
Since we started letting it in 2005, it has been consistently classified with 5 stars. But it is also a special property: with very old building elements, stoves, beams, doors...
We have carefully combined modernity with antiques and small details in the interior design so that you will find an extraordinary and cosy holiday flat.
There are no insulated windows or thermal insulation systems, but it is still cosy and warm even at -29 degrees and with an easterly wind.
The house has been restored with clay/lime ceilings and walls, single glazing and doors have been preserved and added in the historical proportions. The restoration in 2005 was not the end, but when the house is not rented out, so we cannot disturb guests, we carry out renovations and repairs all year round. The house has electric heating in all rooms as well as historic but functioning, effective stoves. If you wish, you can burn wood/coal from our shed for a fixed cost price. If you arrive in cold weather, we will have preheated the house for you for one to three days. There is no start-up phase for you. In winter, we recommend that our guests use the stoves. We will give you an explanation when we hand over the keys so that you can operate the stoves without any previous experience. During the transitional period, we recommend using electric heating.
There are plenty of seasonal blackberries, redcurrants and gooseberries in the garden, which you can eat as much as you like.
Pets: One (!) well-groomed and well-behaved dog per flat is welcome. Please be considerate of other holiday guests who have booked the other half of the house and also think of families with small children who play and stay on the property. You may bring a dog up to 60 cm shoulder height. We charge a surcharge per night for this on arrival. The entire property is enclosed by a dachshund-proof picket fence. We would like to point out that the garden is not a dog-walking area, but a playground for the children of our holiday guests and it goes without saying that you should NEVER leave your four-legged friend unattended in the house and garden.
If you would like to book both flats in this fisherman's cottage, please contact us.
You will find two more holiday flats in the Fischer Hus Lütt Hauke in the same village.
Coast:
Naturally, a fisherman's cottage is close to the water. You have a little view of the water from the garden gate. Godewind is only about 50 metres from the beach. This is a small village beach, not huge but never overcrowded. Two other bathing spots in/near the village.
Two other very beautiful beaches 20 minutes by bike, very easy to cycle through the beautiful coastal landscape. All the beaches in the region are maintained by the municipalities during the season and the water quality is monitored by the state authorities. Everything is small and manageable and, unlike the Baltic Sea coast, the region favours gentle tourism. There are no traffic jams, lack of parking spaces, high parking fees and visitor taxes on the lagoon coast as there are on the Baltic coast.
The canoe is available for use in the garden for a fee and a deposit. We don't have life jackets, but the lagoon is very shallow at the village beach and the reeds and is therefore ideal for small children and for ice skating in winter. It is refreshing even in hot summers, never as icy as the Baltic Sea and has no jellyfish as it is fresh water.
Fishing has characterised the village since 1150, and the fishermen are happy to take you on an early morning tour of the lagoon in their small wooden boats for a small fee. A two-masted wooden fishing boat has been refurbished for excursions and sets off on trips across the lagoon from its home harbour in Altwarp. Other boat trips from Seebad-Ueckermünde to Swinemünde, Szczecin, ...
Village and surroundings:
The locals in the village and region are very friendly.
Altwarp is situated on the tip of a peninsula. You will experience pure nature, as the village is located directly in the (!) nature park "Stettiner Haff" and is therefore very extensively surrounded by coastal landscape with water, dunes, marsh meadows and alluvial forests. The huge nature park has its own administration, which organises hikes, cycling and canoe tours (beaver, ...) and offers them at reasonable prices. Information material is available in our house or via the nature park. Of course you can also go fishing, explore nature on your own by canoe or bike, go sailing, surfing, kitesurfing, ...
In autumn you can hear the deer roaring in the garden, which spend the evenings in the dunes and reeds right next to the village and eat the last apples from the trees. In winter you can skate on the lagoon. The winter service works very well, we don't know any villages on the lagoon that are cut off, as was the case on Rügen in 2010.
Shopping, restaurants:
The corner shop is about 30 metres away. You will find sufficient tabs for the dishwasher, soap, coffee filters, salt, pepper, tea towels, washing-up liquid, toilet paper, ...
The small shop in the village is open during the week from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 15:00 to 18:00 and on Saturdays until 11:00. Despite its limited size, it is very well stocked and not expensive. On your journey you will pass the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, a very pretty seaside town where you will find all the usual discount stores, banks, cinema, railway station, ...
There are three restaurants in the fishing village, which are also open in winter. All of them offer fresh, delicious fish dishes. There are also two fish shops at the harbour and in the dunes, run by Altwarp fishermen during the season, with a smokehouse, roaster and restaurant, offering excellent value for money. There is also a hairdressing salon and a nurse in the village.
The fishing village of Altwarp has levied a tourist tax since spring 2023.
Excursions:
It's an hour's drive to Usedom if you want to immerse yourself in the resort hustle and bustle. On the island, we recommend the Amber Thermal Baths, Stolpe Castle, Mellenthin moated castle, the GDR Museum in Dargen or the bison enclosure.
Szczecin is also just an hour away, with good bus connections from the Seebad-Ueckermünde bus station. The city is characterised by culture and art with its own opera and philharmonic orchestra, inexpensive shopping at the Polish market and luxury shopping in boutiques, ...
Cars were always safe on the German side and are now safe on the Polish side too.
Boat routes lead to Usedom and Poland, from Altwarp with a picturesque old wooden fishing boat or from Seebad-Ueckermünde. A replica of a large historic Hanseatic cog is moored in the harbour there. You can sail from a nearby harbour on a historic Zeesen boat or hire modern boats for your own tours.
A trip to the smallest Polish town of Neuwarp with its renovated town centre, a new marina, promenade, observation tower and beach with a beautiful old fishing boat is just a short hop across the lagoon.
Not far from Altwarp there is a beautifully built Slavic settlement and a medieval village in Ukranenland near Torgelow, all of which are also ideal for children. There is also the botanical garden in Christians Berg with its famous choir performances.
In the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, we recommend: the castle of the Pomeranian dukes with its museum, the zoo, the beautifully renovated old town, the Kulturspeicher, the town church in its original baroque state, which often hosts concerts, and excursions in the harbour with a replica of a Hanseatic cog and the Peters shipping company,
the pier with its imperial-era beach café and large beach, with play equipment for children, lifeguards, beach chairs, areas for nudists and dogs.
All the beaches in the region are well-kept, white and fine sandy with water quality constantly monitored by the state authority.
The international Giulio Perotti singing competition takes place every two years in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde, as well as various fishing and harbour festivals in the surrounding villages and small towns.
The annual Haff-Sail in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde and the meetings of international traditional sailors in Szczecin and Rostock should also be mentioned.
Wellness in two larger hotels in neighbouring towns and in the seaside resort of Ueckermünde.
Summer medieval spectacles in the region.
For culture lovers who would like to experience even more, we recommend a trip to the Hanseatic city of Greifswald (1 hour) or the World Heritage Site of Stralsund (2 hours), surely the most magnificent Hanseatic city in Germany.
And of course the opera in the ducal Pomeranian and later royal Prussian palace in Szczecin and the philharmonic orchestra in its own new building. There are many other classical concerts and musical events throughout the region throughout the year.
Berlin is also only 180 km away, i.e. 2 hours by car, if you would like to make a detour there.
Leisure/sporting activities:
These are just a few examples:
Water skiing, surfing and kite schools in Karlshagen or Zinnowitz
Kitesurfing in the lagoon
Climbing forest in Ueckermünde
Golfing e.g. Baltic Hills Golf Usedom or Balmer See in Benz
Many, very well-developed hiking and cycling trails
In addition, many well-maintained forest and meadow paths through the coastal landscape
Bowling in nearby Bellin
Sauna lovers can relax and unwind in the Hotel Haff Huus in the village of Bellin.
Fun pool/heath pool in Torgelow
Further activities/events can be requested at the tourist information centre at the town harbour in Seebad-Ueckermünde.
Larger play equipment for children:
At the bathing beach 350 metres away there is some play equipment for children, climbing ship, swings, ... and volleyball, beach ball.
There is also a beautifully designed football pitch on the other side of the village below the old windmill.
Weather:
On a ten-year average, the Haff coast, like the Baltic coast with a few small regions in southern Germany, has by far the most hours of sunshine per year. It is therefore not a "stroke of luck" that the sun shines, but statistically much more likely than in the rest of Germany. Normally the sun shines, so when the weather is "bad", it doesn't mean continuous rain, but at worst "changeable", i.e. it rains once and it can be permanently sunny again. A whole day of rain is very rare, even in March/April. As is usual on the coast, it tends to be windy. Pomeranian winters are cold and covered in deep snow. The winter service works very well.

We say "Welcome to the Szczecin Lagoon"
